My point was that the enthusiasm in the American people for war (or whatever) after 9/11 won't be seen for a few generations at least. It's true Saddam and Bin Laden are gone and we have permanent bases in Iraq but I'm not sure if it's worth it for decades of trust.

Too simple a view. Failure of Afghani mission demostrated lack of willpower on American side and other nations started smelling blood.
