I can't really speak to the potential religious nature of it. I was there in the 1990's and the churches were already hollowed out and the people were already lost and without God. We had a bunch of really huge and grande churches in my little town of 4 and a half thousand that were barely used. Beautiful architecture. The Baby Boomers went to them as children and then when they had children, they stopped going.
I can only speak to the general attitude of unions and work. I fled from the area in 1999.
