I knew the north had a lot of irish, Italians and jews. However after some research I was shocked by how non-american the north has almost always been. It's just been an endless black hole of immigrants since 1800. Growing up in the south, every white person I knew could trace their ancestors back to the 1600s. No wonder modern "america" is just an empire based on "values" and yankees become irate at the idea that there is any national identity based on heritage.

We've known this for years Massachusetts, the place where puritan america was founded now has none of its founding stock left. apart from some relics in vermont, NH and maine the original founding stock puritans are gone Only in the South and Appalachia and some parts of the west are original founding stock anglo americans left. It really depends on self identification. People in the north all claim to be German Italian etc to sound more exotic even if 3/4 of their ancestry may come form the British isles. It’s really hard to know

Seems the germans came in two waves. The liberal ones you mention mostly settled in the midwest in the mid 19th century. However there was a much earlier Swiss/German contingent that came over in the early 1700's due to religious persecution. Ben Franklin used to complain about them. I have a few ancestors that left Switzerland after the anabaptists got btfo.

Hell, I even went as far back as the 1500s and found out that my first English ancestor immigrated from France and Anglicized his surname before his grandchildren came over by ship to the US when it was still just The Colonies.
