Yeah, it pretty clearly was not a faint. It was an attempt to win the war quickly using a "shock and awe" campaign that would scare the Ukrainian leaders. Once it failed, there was no point in sitting around Kiev because with the limited amount of forces available, it would have been impossible to actually take Kiev and those forces were needed elsewhere. Ironically, if the Russians had not tried to rush Kiev at all and had instead added those forces to one of the south/south-east groupings, it is possible that they would have managed to achieve a much greater breakthrough and roll up the entire Ukrainian position in the south-east. The Russian leaders are truly, truly imbeciles and I think one should understand that to be true whether one is for or against the war.
