Theres a few reasons why, this is one. The other (As an American, you WILL relate to this) Russia is a petroleum state. Ukraine found off shore deposits but couldn't tap them. The west made deals to help with this. but that would turn Ukraine into a competing state. A state that would surely be prefered over Russia and make russia politically much weaker.
Thats 2 major reasons. Their is also the major geographical advantage of control Ukraine in the event of a War between Russia and Nato. the same advantage that cost the Nazi the war.
Its all simple shit. Putin made it very clear, back off and we can co-exist. And he was ignored. No one thought he'd actually flip the coin. No matter how many times he said he would. Its not like he hadn't done it before (Crimea)

If I remember correctly the original reason was his parliament said that the Luhansk and Donetsk part of Ukraine were recognized as independent, so when they were shelled by Ukraine the Russians intervened in a "special operation" to ensure their freedom. Afterward he said expanded the operations to all of Ukraine saying he wanted to to "demilitarize" them and now he officially wants to partition the country.

I watched the full 30 minute address that he gave to the Russian public on the day of the invasion. Basically, his justifications were
