Mexico mostly fucked up itself. Like when you made Santa Anna your president to fight the USA after he had already lost a war against just the state of Texas and then he fucked up the US-Mexico war even harder and ended up selling off a bunch of Mexican territory.
Or when the Mexicans overthrew and killed emperor Maximilian and expelled European influence in favor of US-puppet Benito Juarez despite the fact that Maximilian's government would have resulted in a far more independent Mexico. Most Mexican national holidays are still based around this event when Mexico effectively became America's bitch.
