In order to be truly free of slavery, the slave must free himself. Look at the story of the Hebrews leaving Egypt as an example. They left their slave mentality behind. It's a big part of the story.

It was good for the African Kingdoms that engaged in the slave trade. Not so good as a slave although that dependend greatly on the era, region and owner. Some were treated as family, freed upon owners death customairly, etc. In places like Louisiana blacks owned slaves as well as Creoles. It's way more complicated than just black v. white. But in general, you'd rather be a freedman of course. But there were laws against mistreating slaves etc.
I can't say I really blame the blacks for chosing to leave the farm (some didn't and stayed on to support their former owners) and be beggers. They were used after the war by the Union as political lackies and this helped stoke much of the racial tension later on leading to Jim Crowe.
