The country had suffered humiliations and economic decline for the previous 15 years under LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter. Four straight absolute disaster presidencies.
Reagan gave people optimism and pride. Lowered taxes and regulations, strengthened the military, and despite his flaws and scandals he was still far better than anyone since.
