You're right for the most part. It's a difficult distinction to make because so many "Ukrainians" speak Russian as a first language, and look similar to Russians. But given Ukraine's position as a very close neighbor to the Balkans and the former Ottoman Empire, it is clear that they are a slightly muddier version of slav than Russians are.
