In the 90s, German Lufthansa sponsored a study that would prove
their climate-friendliness to further their corporate PR psychopathy.
Planes have quite low fuel consumption per passenger mile,
but they pollute at 10km+. This multiplies its effect on solar radiation.
As the results were so catastrophic that no amount of corporate lies
would have been able to spin it positively,
it was decided to quietly bury the study.
Since then, leading eco activists paid by their lobby groups and other industries
have focused on easier, more ideologically useful targets like cars, housing, meat.
And every newer study on warming contribution by industry contains doctored
values about the influence of airplane exhaust gas.
In reality, they are almost the single cause of all recent temperature change.

it's because the air is already saturated with water vapor, and the vapor trail cannot disperse
when the humidity is low, the air can soak up the vapor and it disperses

check Ventusky for humidity at 3000m whenever you see the contrails, you will notice there's always high humidity when they are visible, always low when they are not
