It's a developmental disorder loosely attributed to a few things including genetics and age of parents at conception. There is no more a cure for it than there is for down's syndrome. At best there are strategies to help the child grow up in such a way that they learn to mitigate the problems to some degree (if they are functioning). If they are severe cases, non verbal, require constant care, there is nothing.

Somehow, it's a mark of pride for mothers to have some developmentally challenged kid now. Friends of my own kids, kids I know from the library or school, their mom will happily rabbit on about various therapists or special ed classes. And they're just normal kids. I don't know what the hell they're doing.
