Because the moon landing never happened. The astronauts went no further than low earth orbit, and the rest was faked in a studio.
The apollo launcher program was deleted because it doesnt work. They did not have the technology ready to land on the moon and safely return.

In the 1960's you could strap a bunch of men to explosive ordinance and send them into orbit without real concern. If they died, it was a bummer but the mission carried on with a bit more scrupulous engineering to be more successful next time.
Today? Well, it's a lot different. For a number of reasons
First and foremost it is ungodly expensive to send people to space, nevermind the Moon. The U.S. has also funneled almost all of it's tax revenue into paying for Wars and debt. Which consequently have built up more debt on the back of debt. Space is not on the forefront of American politics or financial interest.
But why is it so expensive?
Lawyers and Insurance companies.
A good example of this is the Cessna 172. A small aircraft used almost universally for early pilot training. In the 1950's you could buy one, fully equipped, for around $16,000. Today? a C172 NXi will cost you around $500,000.
This is because every time some Joe-shmo got into a Cessna made a mistake or did something stupid that cost him his life, Lawyers descended upon the Company and raked them for everything they could. Over time, this drove up the price as more safety features, training, and requirements were placed upon the Manufacturer.
At one time Cessna produced over 20 different models of light aircraft. Today they produce 2 and they both cost over $400,000 brand new. All because of Insurance Liabilities and Lawyers.
Space is no different today. Especially as it is seen as immensely more dangerous.
