They were there. I traced back some ancestors to New Mexico and Texas before it was part of the USA. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo gave Mexican citizens in the seized territories the option of retaining their Mexican citizenship and leaving or losing their Mexican citizenship, gaining US citizenship, and staying. Nearly all stayed because they just wanted to stay with their land. Plus the Mexican government neglected them by not investing in infrastructure or protecting them from Indian raids.
90% of Latinos in the USA are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. The real Mexicans who “never left” got BLEACHED into oblivion by BWC over the century.
