This implies the GOP or at least state leaders would have an interest in succession or conflict. I dont see that being the case since I think they also just want to get rich. They play opposition but in the end as long as their bank accounts get fatter and they get to have high society dinners with important people they are happy. Why blow all that up?
Whats going to happen instead is we're going to have sort of an Ireland Troubles kind of situation. We're probably a couple years from seeing some political assassinations and things will get pretty tense. There are loads of men who have been completely disenfranchised and have no stake in society at all and I think we're going to start seeing some of those people start taking out their anger because they'll have nothing to lose. This is especially true if we start seeing economic hardship which seems very likely.
If we get into any serious instability in the US it will likely kick off WWIII. As soon as China sees we are compromised at home they will go for Taiwan. Japan will be forced to respond. Russia will also likely try to grab up all former Soviet territory and become aggressive towards Europe

I think about this a lot. WW3 would almost certainly cause a fracture in the US (and maybe here too), but civil unrest would probably put a damper on WW3, since China would also (is) collapse and have their own populist uprising.
