Wrong. Papa Bush administration promised them that NATO wouldn't expand. NATO expanded right to their border. The U.S. sent a bunch of Harvard grads to loot their economy when they transitioned from the Soviet Union to Russia. Most recently of course the U.S. orchestrated two coups in Ukraine to dispose of democratically elected leaders. Put Ukraine on the roadmap for NATO membership. U.S. has armed Ukraine with sophisticated weapons. U.S. pulled out of ABM and INF treaties (INF under Trump in 2019) which therefore threatens placing intermediate range nuclear missiles in Ukraine.

That's true, but at the same time american citizens had become ambivalent at worst about Russia, and mostly apathetic. There was a chance for a steady peace, and this was evident with the election of Trump. Americans weren't falling for the Russian bullshit anymore. Then Putin decided to invade Ukraine. What a dumb fucking move. It still hasn't registered with most people how much of a game changer that was.
