Germany was in a very vulnerable position, totally dependent on Romanian oil wells right next to the Soviet line. A quick move to take or destroy the oil wells would have crippled Germany overnight. When Molotov openly threatened to attack Finland again after the Winter War, that only stoked Hitler's fears.
And of course Hitler hated Bolshevism and distrusted Stalin to begin with.
