The root of socialist angst is the fact that deep down they know there are people who are naturally their betters. When a person of high intelligence, capability, and genetic quality witnesses another person with those traits or better, they are almost uniformly happy to have met them and impressed. When a low-echelon person meets a person of high intelligence, capability, and genetic quality they are immediately infuriated. Their inferiority complex goes haywire, they react with resentment, hostility, and defensiveness to any interaction. This is because on a deep level they are incredibly envious of the other person and bitter that they are stuck being a pathetic specimen of a human being while there are others out and about who have it all.

Leftist political doctrine is just a gigantic cope put to action. The losers and dregs of society decide to unite against their superiors under the mental gymnastics idea that instead of being inferior people, they're the victims of evil manipulation by capitalist pigs who are intentionally keeping them in a low station. Why do you think they immediately murdered intelligentsia, kulaks, royalty, etc. when they rose up? I'm not just talking about in the Russian civil war, it started with the French Revolution and every leftist uprising of its kind they did this. The leaders of these groups were always unremarkable brutes. The entire thing is just a gigantic cope with being terrible.

That's why self-improvement is such an offensive idea to them. On the one hand, other people improving themselves fills them with rage, because it's just another person who is clearly better than them (or is going to be). Then the idea that they would NEED to improve themselves because they're inferior to what they could be also fills them with rage because of the inferiority complex and their needs to stroke their undeservedly huge ego. "I'm perfect already, why lift weights like some self-improving fascist??"

He is not the sort of person who has an inner sense of confidence in his ability to solve his own problems and satisfy his own needs. The leftist is antagonistic to the concept of competition because, deep inside, he feels like a loser.

Art forms that appeal to modern leftish intellectuals tend to focus on sordidness, defeat and despair, or else they take an orgiastic tone, throwing off rational control as if there were no hope of accomplishing anything through rational calculation and all that was left was to immerse oneself in the sensations of the moment.
