I generally agree with this except when your post isn't the case. I'm engaged, am outdoors either building or fixing things, going to school and am a genuinely interesting person with a deep personality and I have a dog. I have it because the dog has personality and combined with its tendency to do stupid shit makes for great entertainment and when playing with it reminds me of my youth and how I shouldn't take life so seriously sometimes.
