The governments of island and mainland China are still in a state of civil war.
The island government has lost control of most of the territories it previously controlled.
On the other hand, the mainland government never had control over the main island and some other territories.
In short, Taiwan is not independent from the rest of China - it is China, ~90% of which has been taken over by red-ass scum.
And the US just supports them financially and with weapons, and will help their government regain control of the rest of the territories when the time comes.
Same story with Ukraine, they just lost less territory.

There is no “if”. Taiwan is very clearly an independent country. They have their own government, military, currency, passports, etc. They’ve also never been ruled by a government based in China. China has been governed by a government based in Taiwan though.
