the thing with pre-Christian Indo-European societies is that young boys and slaves weren't seen as fully men, thus were seen as closer to women. Until one reached manhood and went through the rite of passage, one wasn't a man. thus, some tribes, including here Greeks and Romans, thought it ok for them to sexually exploit these - what they considered - lesser beings. read here:
