Let’s discuss the possible factions and they’re probable chances of survival in and after the civil war. A rule I’m going to follow is that this faction needs a actual goal to accomplish so no boogaloo boys.
I’m going to split this into 3 types: Conservative, Liberal, and Other.
Conservative: Libertarians - Will likely occupy suburban areas and very rural communities. Likely to be split into different militias rather then a coalition.
White Nationalists - I don’t see wignats being able to form any cohesive faction. More likely to just get subsumed into the other factions instead. Deep South would have a few confederate groups but the more powerful ones would give up the more racial policies and just be either libertarian or christian nationalist.
Christian Nationalists - What I predict it be the largest and most powerful faction among conservatives. Especially in the Bible Belt. While libertarians would be more popular, this faction would be more united.
Liberal: Liberal factions will most likely only exist within cities or at least start out there.
Communist - Non existent. Simply not enough numbers to form a cohesive factions larger then 50 people at a time.
Progressive/Socialist - Would be made up of youth. Starting out in cities and if the fed faction is caput would receive the international aid. Assuming cities don’t get taken out instantly would be the largest liberal faction.
The Feds - Would have the biggest advantage at the start from pure inertia but the longer it goes on the worse their chances get. Military bases and Washington DC would be its main areas mid game.
Mormon Church - Made up of Mormons and would only exist within Utah area and attempt to create Deseret how this goes idk depends on how California and Texas moves.
Neoliberals - This group would be on the feds faction at first but slowly become its own thing. Would be made up of richer liberal states (California, NYC).
Cartel Warlords - entirely existing on the southern border and whoever runs California and Texas biggest enemy. If the US collapses Mexico will likely follow. This leaves a power vacuum for the drug cartels which already are paramilitary orgs with political influence to be the warlord faction.
Neutral - The faction of these who don’t have any real goals outside of survival. Made of cities and states who are managed to retain control and simply wait out the war and usually side with whoever seems to be winning.

State governments will be apart of these factions yes. Although for something like Texas they’d be in a civil war with just picking what faction to join. Texas would have Christian nationalists, libertarians, white nationalists, neolibs, and feds (lots of military bases) in its territory. Texas will be the largest shit show
