The other day I was thinking of a quote attributed to Hitler and realized my naivete.
The quote, as often translated, is "The bigger the lie, the more people will believe it".
But that is not exactly what he said, and it made me wonder why someone would translate it that way. Then I realized (((who))) must've translated it.
The intention of the mistranslation was to make it sound as though Hitler had a casual attitude towards lying to his own people. But this is not accurate.
What he actually said translates more closely to "The majority of people will likely be deceived by a large falsehood than a smaller one."
I then realized he was talking about the propaganda of enemies of the people. So the point of mistranslating it was to vilify Hitler to make it sound like he was proudly the source of falsehoods. Since it had to be translated somehow, this was the translators choice.
But it was actually a warning, and one they did not want repeated. Ironically, the misquote rather proves he was trying to make.
