The price they charge and the amount the insurance company pays is not the same. They intentionally overcharge because they don’t know what your plans maximum payment for specific services is. The insurance also has a maximum out of pocket, meaning this person probably only paid like $5k on a $300k bill

I worked in hospital administration here in Denmark for a while. Specifically in anesthesia/ICU which was one combined department.
The annual budget for that department was about 750 million DKK which comes to a bit over 100 million USD.
American hospitals are charging ridiculous bullshit prices because they are fleecing the insurance companies, not because they actually expect the patients to pay those amounts.
I say fuck both sides of that grift.
