A lot of them are very religious, uneducated, and deeply distrustful of people who aren't like them. They naturally gravitate towards people who appear to know what they're talking about and will tell them what they should think, appear to be goofy or stupid, and pretend to be like them. They're basically primed to be followers of something and never really advance beyond that mental state.
The dangerous few who follow Trump are the people who recognize him as an opportunist, and want to follow in his footsteps. They are reasonably intelligent, educated, and completely amoral, desiring only power and the chance to gather a following.
