Why do so many "medieval re-enactors" and enthusiasts always ignore that the Catholic Church controlled every aspect of people's lives, the existence of slavery, and there was no such thing as freedom of speech, freedom of belief, or expression? They believe in some feelgood Hollywood version of history instead. If these people actually were unironic serious flat earth Catholic wahhabists who wanted to go back to the dark ages that would be pretty based. But they're not though. Your question is spergy but you raise a great point. Medieval Europeans were generally very serious Catholics who would be disgusted with the ways and norms of this age, and anyone who wishes to seriously reenact that ought to understand it and portray it as such. And that is easiest to do if you already believe like a medieval Catholic would.

But to answer your question directly, its definitely that these people played a lot of D&D, a lot of fantasy LARPs, and then they want to act like they're real medievals for a little while but still bring their modern idiocy with them.

They do have much more historically accurate LARP camps for spergs who do all their own leatherworking and want to sit in a damp field eating porridge and talking about Historical European Martial Arts, I have an in-law who does that shit.
Look for "re-enactments" instead of fairs/festivals.

It skews a bit fatter than the general populace, but go to one in a thin state to see hot women in costume.
