We don't have opossums here, but seems unlikely to me. Over here it's martens and polecats that'll take your younger cats. They are all more or less omnivorous given the chance, so maybe possums kill them too.

Possums literally come to my front porch all the time at night and share my outdoor cat's food. I have seen them just sitting around with the cats and neither of them cared. They get along with cats well in my experience.

If I see one in the street, I'll put my hazard lights on and lure it to the side of the woods with some cat food or just gently shoo it back into the grass.
Possums can't covertly when they play dead, so they tend to panic and get hit by cars because they freeze up when one approaches.
