I live in the rural south and I've seen some guys from Midwestern states assimilate fine but types from places like Chicago, New York, and California will be hated if only because they'll always remind you about where they came from and how it's supposedly better.

I live in a town of 2500 with no zoning. I own 12 mostly wooded acres with 3 natural streams. My neighbors are quiet and nice. They don’t bother me but if I need something they are happy to help. It is as close to paradise for me as I can imagine, but not for everyone.

yes, we do. really standard of living out here is no different than in the city. things i've noticed though in the few years since i moved out here:
>no minorities
>no neighbors
>starlink is good enough
>power goes out more often than need be
>more driving for basic stuff, so you make fewer trips to accommodate

the main difference i've found is that the nearest neighbors are 300' away and i can take a piss outside like a free man. i can also walk out my backdoor and go hiking for miles and miles and not see or hear another living person.
i've got the space for a huge garden, shop, and whatever random projects my boy wants to work on (this last weekend it was a DIY forge for making a knife. last week it was a 'survival shelter' off in the woods ala alone.)
swimming hole on the river is a 5 minute bike ride, lake is 5 miles away as well.

downside is as covid has shown, people are starting to want to get out of cities, so they move out here and bring their repugnant city ways with them. lady at the bottom of our hill has a few cows, and the transplants that bought the plot next to hers actually complained about the noise and smell.
