Plus, like others said, they get the whole summer off, plus every holiday and a long Christmas break and spring break. Plus a powerful union and pensions and other assorted benefits. I worked briefly in education (not teaching but creating computer science curriculum for teachers to use with their kids). I have never been so unimpressed with a profession, especially STEM teachers (some of the English/history teachers seemed competent, but none of the teachers who were supposed to teach STEM had competence beyond what the highly structured curriculum materials provided them). It's also a highly insular union culture that seems to prop up and defend incompetent members. Glad I'm out of that sector but my key takeaway is to vote against any local politician who supports the NEA and never put your kid through public school.

The school system thought we were lying about our home schooled kids scores. Nope, they're just not surrounded by niggers and tranny teachers. They pushed hard this year to make home schooling difficult, suck it faggots my kids are learning the correct curriculum. We will be homeschooling from our beach house for the next month. Yet a good grade school educator can change someone's life. The majority are shit, but there are those (parents principle) who are very very competent and they work 10-12 hour days with many weekend hours preparing and customizing their activities and learning materials as well as grading and evaluating their students. A good teacher can save lives and improve society. A bad teach can destroy lives and bring society to its knees. The biggest problem in the teaching profession is bandwidth. While technology has helped with this the other problem is that as you achieve higher bandwidth, personalization and support shrinks in response. Teaching should be a much more important and lucrative profession but also significantly more scrutiny should be put on the positions.

I did desktop tech as a student job in college for the education department - so I was fixing computers for the profs that taught the classes.

This. When I was in 5th grade my teacher has just transferred to teaching 5th grade after teaching 6th grade for several years. There were a few of us who were in the "gifted" program and taking 1 year advanced math. So we took 6th grade level math in the 5th grade. Any time I asked her a question about the 6th grade math she was clueless. I had to go down the hall to the 6th grade teacher to get the question answered. Dumb lady couldn't even do 6th grade math even though she had taught it for years. If she didn't have the teacher's answer book in front of her she couldn't do it.

She didn't understand what she taught. She just copy/pasted it from the book like a mindless drone.
