The idea was that economic connections would make war ever more costly until eventually it would cease to exist entirely. This often gets summed up as "no two country's that both have McDonald's will go to war with each other". Russia has, in its recent invasion, turned the theory around, by forcing western powers to choose between their connections with russia (gas, fertilizer, etc.) and defending Ukraine.

The theory is that military conflicts between states are reduced more drastically the more interdependence a country has on international trade.
The theory is not based on absolute peace, it is based on the fact that the world is more peaceful thanks to the massive power and influence of private companies and multinational companies and how, in turn, States depend on these
