The original post says "and that was with insurance" so I'm assuming that since the guy said he was insured he probably was insured. However chances are it wasn't GOOD insurance. Given everything else described in the post about how they avoided debt and spent wisely to save up, they probably went with the cheapest insurance possible that didn't actually cover a lot of what they needed because "well it'll never happen to us".

Yes I think you’re right. Risk taken. Did not pay off. Unlucky I guess. Strange area to take risk for monetary gain IMO I would’ve risked some of the savings instead.
