"Lawmakers" should be advisory only and a check against executive. Citizens should vote directly on all laws proposed by office-holders or by referendum.

A democracy is just a form of government where the people have the supreme power in a state. A Republic is where the peoples say is said through elected representatives. It only differs from an representitive democracy because it outlaws the possibility of having a monarch. Both statements are true.
