Het is in asielzaken vaak lastig en tijdrovend om een besluit te nemen. "Misschien moeten we eerder zeggen: we geven het voordeel van de twijfel", zegt Maas. "We kunnen niet gaan sjoemelen in het proces, natuurlijk niet. Maar dit gesprek moeten we met elkaar voeren."
Vorige maand wachtte een derde van de asielzoekers langer dan de wettelijke termijn van zes maanden op een oordeel. Het aanmeldcentrum in Ter Apel is al maanden overvol, waardoor asielzoekers nachten buiten moesten doorbrengen.
Steeds andere prioriteiten Rhodia Maas zegt dat de eerste registratie vaak nog wel goed gaat, maar dat het daarna stokt. Een van de oorzaken is het personeelstekort bij de IND. Ook de ingewikkelde wet- en regelgeving speelt een rol.
