Simple game theory. The value of political victory/power for individuals supersedes the value of ideology. Thus, in any scenario where there are more than two parties, self-interested players will gravitate to the visibly dominant one to the point where it has an absolute advantage over its rivals. As such, a deadlocked two party system is unavoidable.

We’re politics not corrupt, you could easily have more than two parties, but if you believe that you can remove corruption from politics in the most powerful nation on earth, well, you don’t understand human nature.

Get rid of the electoral colleges and gerrymandered voting districts. No more proportional votes, absolute majority only.

First off, there are plenty of people who don’t vote, and some who vote ideologically, but a sufficient majority are susceptible to manipulation by savvy political operators, and it’s that majority which the dominant political parties fight over.

Also, you have to realize that involvement with a political party has benefits far beyond “civic duty”: a person might only vote every other year, but membership in a dominant party provides lifelong social benefits. The bigger the party, the greater the benefits.

It’s not unlike religion: I’d suggest that the vast majority of church goes aren’t do it simply to get into heaven one day.
