I can't say for sure, but I'd bet that mainland China gives Taiwan privileged access to rare earth metals and Taiwan has cheaper labor than most developed countries.
How does Taiwan maximize the economy in a small land area? High tech. How does China scheme on gaining access to high tech and foreign economies? Eventual take over of Taiwan. How do corporations go on living a life of managerial excess? Shave every penny out of costs with near-slave labor.
It's not like many corporations wouldn't prefer staying in the US. Our government hates the American people. They don't care about climate change. They really want us dead and replaced with 3rd world slaves. They want it NOW!

The main reason why Taiwan is the main manufacturer of semiconductors is because of its low taxes, cheap labor and political tendency towards the West and the United States (owner of the most advanced chip patents in the world and the latest generation)
After the KMT came to Taiwan after losing the Chinese civil war, the KMT tried to promote the opposite of communist China by reducing and eliminating taxes, applying an economy and trade extremely in favor of the United States, etc.
Bottom line: Taiwan gave the United States more exclusive rights and domestic private corporate control than any other country in the world so that Taiwan would become the world's mecca for chip and semiconductor manufacturing and development.
The United States was the one who intentionally allowed Taiwan to become what it is today.
