lets examine this. lets pretend we are discussing a historical battle. how are battles typically categorized. i think generally we can agree that they are categorized by date, location, or belligerents. so basic facts about a battle in any general history lesson would require someone to know who, where, and when... and then maybe why and how for more advanced military history lessons. so if a battle was fought on june 20, someone might say you are incorrect if you say it was fought on the summer solstice, but it is a fact that the summer solstice occurs on june 20 so as an alternative fact about the battle it isnt a problem.... if anything that information could shed light on other questions about the battle.
the issue is that knowing when the summer solstice is isnt applicable to military history thus that fact is discarded when learning about historical battles. because knowing about the summer solstice would more likely appear in astronomy discussions. for the alex joneses of the world, the challenge is to deftly bridge the gap between military history and astronomy. additional research might reveal the general who led the battle was highly superstitious and chose to fight on the summer solstice purposefully. of course, as one 'deep dives' the web of interconnectedness, the nepotistic, orgiastic, swamp like relationships between personages makes it incredibly hard to keep things "sane". the basic historical knowledge for a battle is pretty standard, so with regard to mass shootings, political scandal, terrorist events, etc, a standard for basic knowledge about these events needs to be established. thus alternative facts simply becomes facts.
