I believe it's supported by those who feel vulnerable. Women tend to support it because women are biologically more vulnerable. Weak low T males support it for the same reason.
Another reason could be reproductive fitness. By allowing some men to ammas vast resources we also allow those men to advertise their superior genes. This is a threat to inferior males ability to find a mate.
