If Hitler had been killed in 1940 things may have been better. They'd already conquered most of western Europe and Hitler had recently decided on invading the USSR, maybe with a more level-headed (probably military) leader the war in the east wouldn't have happened and Germany could have a negotiated peace with the west - perhaps keeping Danzig/Posen and becoming a country more similar to monarchist Germany/fascist Italy. Though in such a scenario there's always the danger of the USSR expanding, especially without having to go through the devastation of the German invasion in our timeline
