If the US was ever in a position to need surface to air missiles in a war then it would probably be losing. The reality is that the Chinese would be obliterated in an air war versus the west plus Japan. They would have to have air supremacy to take Taiwan and they're thousands of planes short of that.

We would win a war easily, but when China cuts off all the things it makes for us (electronics, pharmaceuticals, appliances) our entire economy and supply chain would collapse. When we finally (if ever) got alternate sources of those things, they would be 20% to 50% more expensive, forever. Just like Russia, China can fuck us 10x more than we can fuck them.
