Google play records your location all the time. It has a wifi functionality that pings all the available networks and if one of them is part of Google Fi then your location is logged. Tons of people have been/are being caught for various crimes because their Android phone which runs off Google Play Services is tagging their every move.
Modern police simply ask the DNA testing companies and Google for all the info they need to solve most crimes
