The population of Rhodesians (Whites) hovered around 200,000. That's 200,000 men, women, children, elderly. The black population was about 5,000,000 and skewed young. Can you see a problem here?
At its largest extent, the Rhodesian military was some 20,000 men. That is including blacks and conscripts.
All White males had to serve as conscripts in the army. Blacks were allowed to volunteer and despite all the cope, the government well understood that they were unreliable and the black contingent was filled with defectors, informants, and arms smugglers to the terrorists. Despite conscription, the RSF was chronically short on manpower. Conscription removes valuable young men from your economy and society. Conscripting young men away from their wives, families, and jobs also means fewer White children being born, and sons growing up for months or years at a time without their fathers. This is before we even factor in emigration and ethnic cleansing, which devastated the White population and doomed Rhodesia to military defeat.
Add to this the fact that international (((sanctions))) made acquiring new military equipment or even replacement parts for old equipment a herculean task. They had almost no modern jets and relied almost entirely on planes from the 1940s and 50s.
Why Rhodesia lost the Bush War, how they could have won
The black terrorists, despite all the Fireforce missions that killed 35 terrorists for every 1 RSF soldier, won economically, politically, and militarily because they were under no illusions what kind of war they were fighting. And every "marxist" they shot was immediately replaced by another black.
They killed thousands of them in a single day over and over. And the blacks just recruited more blacks.
The RSF would waste the precious lives of Whites to go hunt down armed insurgents.
Then, at the conclusion of the battle, after slaughtering the sons of African families, they would leave the hate filled parents and brothers alive in their huts.
And then the government was *SHOCKED* that the rebels immediately replenished their numbers.
That is how the RSF fought the war. How did the black supremacists fight it?
Despite their military ineptitude, they fought smarter than the Rhodesians did. They didn't waste time trying to convert the Whites to communism or kill the soldiers. Instead, they engaged in ethnic cleansing terrorism against unarmed Whites. They killed farmers' wives while their husbands were away. They massacred Christian priests who taught them how to read black nationalist literature. They shot up school busses.
Why did they do such evil things? Because they wanted the Whites to leave.
And it worked.

By 1979, 1000 Whites were fleeing the country every single month.
Out of a population of 200,000.
If the Rhodesian Bush war had continued for even another year, there would have been no RSF left.

The Whites targeted black soldiers. And every 1 they killed was instantly replaced by another 10 because they refused to kill the source of black terrorists: the blacks.

The reason why they lost the war was because they failed to understand the kind of war they were engaged in. The military goals of the blacks was to drive out the Whites. They could have tried fighting the Rhodesian military. And they would have lost.

They launched mortars at cities and then fled. They planted landmines on roads. They shot up schools. They shot down aircraft. They tortured the wives of soldiers to death and raped their children to death.
And this convinced thousands of Whites to leave every year.
They were ethnically cleansing Rhodesia before they even won the war. By 1979, the entire Rhodesian security forces were just 2,700 men and they had no fuel.
Meanwhile the blacks had armies across the border with tanks. The RSF could have fought a heroic last stand. But they would all have died if the conflict had gone on any longer.
