Emergency protection measures activated at nuclear power plant

As we've been reporting this morning, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been struck by shelling - sparking fears that more damage could lead to dire consequences.

Ukrainian state nuclear operator Energoatom has now said emergency protection measures have been activated and one of three working power units has been turned off.

It said that Ukrainian staff continue to work at the station, despite it being under Russian control.

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of being behind the shelling.

Ministers are coordinating a "resilience response" to deal with a cyber attack affecting NHS systems across the UK.

Scottish Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said ministers are being "continually briefed" on the incident and are "working closely on a four nations basis" to organise a response.

"Plans in place to mitigate the impact but there will be some level of disruption," he said.

People seeking medical help via the NHS 111 service have been warned there could be delays after the attack led to a "major" computer system outage.

The security issue was identified at 7am on Thursday morning, and it has affected the system used to dispatch ambulances, book out-of-hours appointments and issue emergency prescriptions.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said he was "being regularly briefed on the incident" affecting NHS 111 services across the UK.

"NHS England has contingency plans in place in areas affected, and disruption to the service is minimal," he said.

The war in Ukraine is set to enter a new phase, British military intelligence chiefs have said this morning.

Russian forces are "almost certainly" massing in the south in preparation for a counter-offensive from Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) warned on Saturday.

Long convoys of military trucks, tanks and towed artillery are moving southwest away from the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, the MoD tweeted in an intelligence update.

"Russia's war on Ukraine is about to enter a new phase, with the heaviest fighting shifting to a roughly 350km frontline stretching southwest from near Zaporizhzhia to Kherson, paralleling the Dnieper River," the tweet said.

Battalion tactical groups - made up of between 800 and 1,000 troops - have been deployed to annexed Crimea and are expected to support Russian troops in Kherson, according to the MoD update.

Equipment is also believed to have been moved from mainland Russia and areas occupied by Moscow - including Melitopol, Berdiansk and Mariupol - via the Kerch Bridge into Crimea.

Kyiv is focusing targeting on bridges, ammunition depots and rail links with growing frequency in southern regions.

Key to this strategy is the important railroad spur linking Kherson to Crimea, with a combination of "block, damage, deny, destroy and disrupt" effects due to be deployed in the hope of hindering Russia's ability to logistically resupply.

The MoD warning comes hours after both Kyiv and the Kremlin blamed each other for shelling on Europe's biggest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia.

The plant was seized by Russian forces in March but continues to be run by Ukrainian technicians.

Meanwhile, the southern front line city of Mykolaiv imposed an unusually long curfew from late Friday to early Monday morning as authorities attempt to catch people collaborating with Russian rivals, the region's governor said.
