My immediate reaction to this (which was posted be a diff user) is that Russia was using ~200,000 troops (now a bit less) and Ukraine is mobilizing everything they can (thus since the incentive for them is to attack in some areas and reclaim) and that Ukraine positions were fortified for 8 years in an active combat scenario while the Germans who were so use to attack never had adequate or a long enough period of time to prepare defenses.
