Samurai families were warrior families that had a elevated social class during the warring period in the 1600's. During Tokugawa, Daimyo or provincial governors, would pay stipends to the samurai, and were required to visit Edo (tokyo) in lavish visits seasonally. After which the mercantile and craftsman classes became more rich in the tranquility of a shogun ruled japan. After a while, samurai being out of the job, became less wealthy from the lack of work, and they became known as ronin. Samurai later had a resurgence culturally with the sino-japanese wars and military. Japanese people still today have samurai family names.
