The Soviets built the Belomorkanal for the same purpose - to transfer fleet quickly to the White Sea in order to advance into North America when they secure Europe.

They fought because the USSR wanted to annex Romania, Bulgaria, and the rest of Finland. Hitler wasn't willing to throw his friends under the bus and knew the Soviets were massing to attack, so he struck before they were ready.
