That was just the overton window, now that it's been a couple years since gay rights happened the GOP has to conserve it.

They’re terrified of the other types of nationalism that they’re trying to make it Christian based because then they can just focus it on 2004 Christian conservative issues instead of getting into what a real nationalist movement is all about. The reality on the ground that we have to accept is that most people, especially the younger 16-50 year old age group that will be relevant in the upcoming political battles, are mostly irreligious or casually, "culturally" religious at most.
You can bemoan secularization, but it is simply what we have to deal with.
