This isn't very honest. The prize of 1.3 billion would be paid out if you chose the annuity option, receiving money over time rather than a lump sum. If you choose the lump sum, you would actually receive about 750 million in winnings before taxes, which would end up chipping it down to around 450 million take-home pay. It's still bullshit, but at least try to be honest about it.
I haven't seen the calculation, but the 1.28 billion is not the lump sum payout. They lump sump payout is somewhere along the lines of 800 million. Then you have federal tax which tops at 37% and then whatever state tax which for me tops at an additional 10%. So at the end of the day the government is going to take around half of your lump-sum winnings, which is already 2/3 of the prize. So you walk away with 1/3 of the total prize. Remember that the next time you buy a lotto ticket; the prize amounts are rigged and you will only get 1/3 of the advertised prize money.

This has results in huge deficit spending that the federal reserve must monetize, which has led to everyone paying for the spending through inflation. Ironically the people this hits the hardest are the ones who barely don't meet the requirements for government aid. They vote for these programs, don't get them, and their cost of living soars. They played themselves.
I'd take the lower lump sum too, don't get me wrong. Still far more money than I would spend in a lifetime, especially if you get some reasonable investments going. Just disagree with the misleading numbers is all.
