Smaller guy are less likely to one hit KO each other which makes for a more interesting fight. The anatomy of their skulls and how the brain reacts to blunt force trauma for a couple of 250 pound heavyweight fighters standing 6'4 is the pretty much the same as it is in a couple of of 5'9 lightweight fighters only the latter weigh 100 pounds less and accordingly have less power in their average punch or kick. It's a good balance between fights that allows for technical expression of skill while still being less likely than the even lower weight classes go the full 3 or 5 rounds and victory being left to the judges decision.

Also smaller hitbox gives you an advantage in evading attacks and it's VERY easy to get on your opponent's back.
