UN resolution 2758 removed Taiwan from the UN because they "illegally usurped" the seat that China held in the UN.
In the resolution it states that it
"recognizes that the representative of the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal representative of China in the United Nations"
The UN basically told Taiwan to gtfo because they are technically a province of China. Only 13 nations recognise Taiwan as Taiwan.

The reason China thinks Taiwan belongs to China is because Margret Thatcher, shortly after the Falkland Islands conflict, met with Mao and basically said they’d give them Taiwan back as “promised” in 200 year old contract. China says it never acknowledges contract (the “great humiliation”) and it’s already part of China, but Taiwanese vote in democratic elections, and are far closer to European than Chinese. But tldr the 100 -year-lease expired and the people who fucked it all up are long dead and laughing at us. I’d 100x sooner fight for Taiwan (as a Brit) than fucking Ukraine

Taiwan is effectively governed as a separate state from China because it's where the losing Nationalist half of the Chinese Civil War fled after Mao's Army routed them out of the mainland. China has the official recognition of most countries on the planet, including the USA, that Taiwan is a part of the PRC, effectively meaning that most of the world has agreed that Taiwan is administrated by a rogue state. China has not been able to reintegrate Taiwan, until now perhaps, for numerous reasons, but primarily I would credit the lasting legacy of Chiang Kai-Shek's iron-fisted rule and later the threat of a US response (despite the official position of Washington).
Since US international power is declining, China is in a better position to officially reintegrate Taiwan.
Puerto Rico is a territory that shot down the referendum that would have made them a state. There is a Puerto Rican independence movement, but most Puerto Ricans don't support it because they like getting free money from Washington in the status quo.
