The 'cultural' genocide was perpetrated by the Canadian government against the first nations. The catholic church (as well as other denominations) assisted the Canadian government by operating many of the schools designed to turn illiterate nomads into farmers and tradespeople like their european counterparts. But like all massive government programs, it wasted billions of dollars, lasted longer than it should have while expanding beyond it's initial scope, and ultimately failing in it's stated goal while trying to blame everyone else but government incompetence.
This past two summers has been the Canadian government trying to shift blame from the fact they fucked up. Basically no churches operated any schools after the 1960's and that most of the abuse from living survivors was done both on the government dime and with the government's knowledge. Even before that time, the schools operated out of the government's expressed consent and understanding of the type of 'educating' was to be administered.
The equivalent to OP would be if the medieval king of France decided to have priests come and beat some civility and education into his peasants so they speak proper fucking french. It's the french king that is committing, condoning, and paying for cultural genocide against his serfs, but the church is fucked up for agreeing to help. Hate the church if you want, but blame the king.
