Depending on the results of the Ukrainian war I think we are looking at the resurgence of the Russian Empire.
If Russia Annexes all or most of Ukraine then they will have taken a good portion back of their pre WWI territory. If this happens then Belarus, who has talked with Russia before about rejoining, will rejoin in official capacity.

There's no way they can set up a puppet government like they wanted to and anything they don't annex will simply join NATO. So Russia is incentivised to take as much of Ukraine as possible.
There are a lot of loud prominent voices in Russia that want a return to monarchy. If Russia is successful in Ukraine then that will reinvigorate the country and be worth all of the damage they took for starting this war. And then with belarus apart of them once again (which would be contingent on taking Ukraine) the we could see an actual modern Empire in Europe.
If this does come to pass, what does that mean for the world and the west? How do we confront this??
If by “Russian empire” you mean China’s embarrassing vassal then sure. Russia is in decline, economically and militarily (regardless of your opinion on their Ukraine performance). All they have is natural resources.

realistically their decline is due to their demographics and subsequently their economics and military. The annexation of Ukraine and belarus would solve those two issues. If Ukraine is annexed, belarus is likely not far behind to join but willingly instead. This would kickstart Russia to reverse its decline.

don't think so. russia has become too mutted ever since the commies took over in 1923. todays russians are proud of their soviet past and mutted race while larping as christians and white empire, the two things are incompatible. putin's own wife is a mutt, moscow has 1.5mio muzzies, and the average russian would do just about anything to avoid military service, but if history has taught us anything it's that only those who fight stay in charge. I view it as more likely that kadyrov will become president of russia than that the russian empire in its Christian European monarchist form would return. funny also how despite all the negative comments one hears out of Serbia and Russia about Germans the last true good Russian ruler and the last real Russian friend of the Serbs was a German. maybe Russians need to reflect on their failure and yet again invite a German to absolutely rule them and put their house in order.

No, Ukraine offers Russia a lot of very important shit. The biggest thing being an increase of population and a monopoly on fertilizer. They will also gain a massive agricultural area and a large amount of oil reserves. Belarus adds to this population which Russia desperately wants to to bolster.
